IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics is the practice of growing plants without soil. Instead, the plants are grown in a nutrient-rich solution and the necessary nutrients are delivered directly to the roots. This method allows for a more efficient use of water and space, as well as a higher yield of crops. Additionally, hydroponic farming eliminates the need for pesticides and herbicides, making your produce healthier and safer for consumption.
  • Why Shipping Container Farms?
Shipping container farms represent a cutting-edge approach to farming that leverages technology, efficiency, and sustainability. These repurposed containers offer a controlled environment for growing crops year-round, regardless of external conditions. Whether you are an urban dweller, a community organization such as a school or university, or a forward-thinking business, shipping container farms provide a scalable and versatile solution for cultivating a variety of crops, using ten percent of the land, and less than ten percent of the water.
  • How Time Consuming is a Shipping Container Farm?
A single shipping container farm requires about 20-30 hours of labor per week, so one person can comfortably operate two containers!
  • Why should I buy a pre-owned container farm?
The main benefit to investing in a pre-owned container farm over a new unit is the price to start growing. The start-up cost is significantly lower than that of a new unit, allowing you to retain more of your initial budget for monthly expenses such as consumables, utilities, cleaning supplies, etc.
  • How much food can one shipping container farm produce?
There are many variables that determine what your crop yields will be. Equipment type, nutrient delivery, and crop selection play a large role in crop turnover. However, most of our 40' container farms have an estimated annual harvest of 2-4 tons of produce! Talk about a lot on your plate...
  • Is a shipping container farm profitable?
When operated correctly, shipping container farms are very profitable! According to this article by Global Garden, the average net profit for a custom built shipping container farm is over $50,000 annually after all monthly expenses such as land leasing, financing, consumables, utilities, and labor costs. If you own land, are purchasing out-right, and will be operating the container yourself, that number will only increase!
  • What if I have no experience with hydroponics?
No problem! We offer training through Green Food Solutions. Whether you're brand new to CEA, container farming, or just need a refresher, Green Food Solutions will take you from novice to pro.
  • How does transportation work?
The buyer of a unit is responsible for transportation. We recommend Eddie at Nationwide Transport Services. The container is loaded via crane onto a flatbed truck to transport it to its destination. Once there, a crane is used to carefully lift the container off the truck and place it in its desired location. In some cases, a self loading truck can be used to load and unload the container which can save time and money for both parties. The seller is responsible for arrangements to have the farm loaded onto the truck.
  • What is Secondhand Farms's Brokerage Fee?
Secondhand Farms charges a fee of ten percent of the sale price.
  • What if I decide I don't want to sell?
Changed your mind? No problem! Our listing agreement can be terminated at any time with a simple email. After 30 days your listing will be off our site, and you'll be free to continue growing!
  • How long does it take to sell a shipping container farm?
Being a niche market, it can be hard to say how long it will take to find a qualified and motivated buyer for your farm. On average, most of our listings are live for 3-4 months before we find them a new home. That being said - some move quicker, and some move slower.
